Rosemaling: or “flower painting” is a Norwegian folk art that dates to the 1700s. Traditionally rosemaling was painted on wood, or wooden items found in churches, and then homes including beams, support posts, ceilings, and items of daily use including chests, cabinets, and ale bowls. There are multiple styles of Rosemaling, each style originating from a different area in Norway and which can be recognized by the differing elements, color and content in including the acanthus scrolls of the Gudbrandsdal and Telemark styles, the flowers of Valdres, Rogaland and Hallingdal styles, and the stylized and colorful Os designs.

I paint in the Telemark, Os and Rogaland styles, on wooden items, functional and decorative for the home, from Velkommen greetings to chairs and trunks and also non traditional Nordic items like skis and clogs. Most of my Rosemaling is on my pottery, making it functional and utilitarian as well as decorative, including traditional designs and forms including ale bowls and tines and modern items such as cappuccino cups and mugs.
